Rusting steel lintels above garage doors and wide windows are extremely common on Middle Tennessee brick veneer homes from the 1970s onward. Steel expands as it corrodes and lifts the brick above it, and it shows first as a horizontal crack following the opening. It is a structural repair.
Repointing a wall that is still moving is wasted work. If a crack is active, the new mortar cracks in the same line within a season, so establishing whether movement has stopped comes before any cosmetic repair.
